The past two seasons have been fruitful for Wake Forest alums on the PGA Tour, as Bill Haas won the 2011 FedEx Cup with Ping G20 Driver as discount golf clubs for sale and Webb Simpson claimed this year’s U.S. Open. The Wake Forest men’s team, though, hasn’t won since February 2010.A victory this week would help one of college golf’s most storied programs return to prominence. The Deacons were 60th in last season’s Golfweek rankings, and haven’t qualified for an NCAA Championship since 2009. He chipped close to make birdies on the par-5 2nd and 10th holes on Monday, and hit a 30-yard flop shot to a short-sided pin close on the par-3 12th hole. Guthrie picked up his first professional title on Sunday after an incredible weekend at the Albertsons Boise Open with Ping G20 Driver, firing a 9-under 62 on Saturday and posting a 6-under 65 on Sunday to clear Richard H. Lee by four shots and take home the $130,500 first-place check. He also earned his PGA Tour card for 2013 with the victory. Guthrie is now a contender for the season-long money title on the Web.com Tour, making $283,463 in only six starts on the tour. He's also made $284,672 in three starts on the PGA Tour. Birdsey credits an improved short game with cheap Ping G20 Driver for his high standing on the leaderboard. He estimates he’s missed 10 greens in the first two rounds, but has made just three bogeys.
